Google plans to make chromebooks compatible with dozens of Android – 3DNews

Earlier this month, Google has released an update for Chrome OS that allows several laptops based on this operating system to run applications designed for Google Android and have access to the Google Play Store. At the moment, only two mobile PC — one produced by Acer, the other — ASUS — compatible with the new build of Chrome OS. However, the company has already released a list of PCs that get the ability to run software written for Android. This list includes almost all current models of PC based on Chrome OS.

Google is trying to move program, developed for Android, its Chrome OS platform for over two years. Initially, the company tried to encourage developers to port their apps on Chrome OS, but it worked for a very limited number of creators of software and apps. At the conference Google I/O in may this year Google announced a new plan: run Android apps on Chrome OS in a special “sandbox”. Then, this summer, Google Play Store activated on three hrobuchak running dev and beta versions.

In September, Google has released a stable build of the OS 53.0.2785.129 (platform version 8530.90.0) for Acer Chromebook R11 (C738T) and ASUS Chromebook Flip. The update contains numerous bug fixes, security updates, improved functionality, and a beta version of the Google Play Store (in this case those who have already downloaded the new version, you’ll have to activate Play Store in the settings of Chrome OS).

At this stage not entirely clear what you want to update in Chrome OS is to activate the ability to run applications for Google Android in the sandbox. However, while Google has included Play Store for own Chromebook Pixel. The logic in the activation of Android apps for Acer Chromebook R11 (C738T) and ASUS Chromebook Flip is simple: both systems have touch screens and can be easily converted into a tablet that will facilitate the use of programs. However, despite the fact that not all of the chromebooks equipped with touch screens, the vast majority of them will receive the support of Android programs in the coming quarters, according to recently disclosed plans Google. So, in addition to the PC based on Chrome OS production Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung and Toshiba, the Android program will receive chromebooks and less well-known manufacturers such as Bobicus, HiSense, Medion, Sector 5 and others (see table below).

Applications for Google Android make Chrome OS a bit more attractive for those looking for an alternative to Google cloud. Since there are hundreds of millions active users of Android, Chrome OS compatibility with these applications can be a good tool for Google operating system for personal computers. However, it should be borne in mind that many chromebooks created considering the fact that they would only use cloud software, and therefore equips the limited capacity of the NAND flash memory for local storage. As a consequence, the compatibility of Chrome OS for Google Android is able to change the very concept platform that would require manufacturers to take this into account when developing the next generation of chromebooks. However, taking into consideration the rumors about the unification of Android and Chome OS, PC manufacturers can not understand that the new PC on the platform of Google will need to have capacious enough storage.
